As the nondiscrimination provision of the Affordable Care Act, Section 1557 builds upon long-standing federal civil rights laws and prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability in health programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance. Key provisions include:
- Providing language assistance services for individuals with Limited English Proficiency (LEP);
- Ensuring effective communication with individuals with disabilities;
- Establishing grievance procedures and designating an employee as compliance coordinator; and,
- Informing individuals about nondiscrimination and accessibility requirements.
