Providing Accessible Care: ADA Requirements for Health Centers
This webinar is included in the
Health Center 360 Annual Compliance Training Subscription.
Despite the fact that people with disabilities comprise approximately 25 percent of the population, they often confront barriers to basic health care services such as physical examinations, weight measurement, and effective communication with their health care providers. “Accessibility” in 2027 means much more than it ever has: from physical and digital accessibility to accessible medical examination equipment, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance requires Health Centers to review their services and how they meet their patient needs with a fresh set of eyes. Intake procedures, websites, patient portals, waiting rooms will all merit a closer look. As accessibility expectations continue to expand, health centers should evaluate whether their facilities, equipment, digital platforms, policies, and day-to-day practices are keeping pace. Proactively identifying barriers can help reduce compliance risk, avoid costly remediation, and improve the patient experience.
In addition to the ADA, Health Centers must comply with an assortment of anti-discrimination laws that apply by virtue of their receipt of federal funding and participation in federal healthcare programs. These laws include the Rehabilitation Act, Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act. This session will cover the interplay and overlap between these anti-discrimination laws and health center program requirements.
Health centers are in a unique position to serve patients with disabilities because they are also affirmatively required by virtue of their receipt of Section 330 funding to provide care in a culturally competent manner while promoting access and eliminating barriers to care. Health centers have an opportunity to support and complement these anti-discrimination laws while meeting their patients’ needs and complying with these federal laws they are bound to follow.
Finally, using recent federal government enforcement examples involving the obligations to provide accessible health care to patients with disabilities under the ADA and these related laws, the presenter will explain what regulators are examining, where health care organizations commonly encounter difficulty, and what health centers can do to identify and address similar risks before they result in complaints or corrective-action obligations.
Whether your health center is beginning an accessibility review or strengthening an established ADA compliance program, this webinar will provide practical insights that clinical, compliance, and operations teams can put to use immediately.
