FTLF is hosting a pre-conference session at the National Head Start Association's 2019 Fall Leadership Institute in Arlington, VA. To register for this training and/or the conference, click here.

Head Start is full of requirements and while every Head Start organization is different, the same rules apply to everyone. Between the Head Start Program Performance Standards, state regulations, and federal law requirements under the Uniform Guidance, it can be challenging to keep everything straight. In the era of the Designation Renewal System (DRS), getting it wrong can have significant negative consequences.

Join FTLF for this pre-conference workshop on existing and emerging high risk areas for Head Start programs. We will cover the challenges you face every day in key topic areas every Head Start leader needs to understand, including:

  • Fiscal Integrity and Grants Management
  • Head Start Human Resources Requirements
  • Data Management Privacy Issues
  • Self-disclosures (including health and safety violations)
  • Tips for preparing for review events under the Aligned Monitoring System (AMS) 2.0, FY19
  • Internal Investigations
  • Deficiency Findings and Documentation

In this one-day workshop, FTLF attorneys will:

  • Describe the laws that apply to Head Start programs
  • Explain where the rules come from and what they mean on a practical level
  • Provide reasonable strategies for meeting the standards for compliance
  • Share realistic solutions for common concerns

This training is hands-on: in each topic area, our attorneys provide specific examples to ensure that you know how to spot an issue and can apply what you learn in a real-world setting. Whether you are brand new to Head Start leadership or need a refresher on recent changes to the rules, this overview will leave you feeling confident about your program’s ability to meet and maintain compliance with its programmatic obligations.

Target Audience

All are welcome, but we think those new to Head Start Leadership or recently promoted to a “C-Suite” position will find this training especially helpful, and more experienced managers will appreciate the refresher and opportunity to network with other professionals in the field.

  • C-Suite / Leadership: CEOs, CFOs, COOs
  • Executive Directors / Head Start Directors
  • Program Directors
  • HR Directors / Managers
  • Grant Managers

Learning Objectives

After this training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the relevant Head Start Program Performance Standards (HSPPS) and Uniform Guidance provisions
  • Apply the HSPPS and Uniform Guidance provisions to successfully mitigate potential compliance issues
  • Describe current hot-topic issues that every Head Start leader should know
